The fine columns and latticework of the trainshed are in evidence in this eastward view from the footbridge. The roof's corrugated cladding had for long been life-expired by this stage and any good rainfall would produce a series of heavy leaks onto the platforms. Banner repeater signals were provided on platform Nos. 11 and 12, underneath the trainshed, for those shorter train formations. © David Glasspool

This view towards the buffer stops and ticket barriers shows where the 1866 trainshed met the 1970s concourse. Outside of the rush hour, the terminus platforms had a decidedly sleepy feel about them, compared to their much busier "high-level" counterparts. The automatic ticket barriers were brought into use in December 2001. © David Glasspool
