On a Saturday afternoon, 4 EPB unit No. 5037 waits at Platform 4 to form the 1650 service to Victoria via Bat & Ball and Catford. On weekdays this service ran to Holborn Viaduct, but at weekends prior to re-opening of the Snow Hill Tunnel as part of the original Thameslink project, the service operated to Victoria. The misalignment between platform edge and canopy is clearly visible; this dates back to the station rebuilding in 1976, at which time the former Platform 5, now Platform 4, had to be widened to accommodate the new stairs and lift shaft. The large section of brick wall in front of the station building hides an external steel staircase leading from the booking hall down to the station offices and taxi rank. © David Morgan
