Rochester Freight Depot & Chatham Sidings

No. 33049 is seen shunting its Railfreight vans in the yard in 1984, whilst a Bulleid-designed 4 EPB is upon the approaches to Rochester station. This picture provides a clear view of the construction of the 1959-installed Rochester Panel. The yard ceased to handle goods traffic in July 1988, but No. 33049 had already been withdrawn, going out of service during March of that year. The locomotive was subsequently scrapped in March 1989. © Chris

A refurbished 4 CEP is observed on the Rochester station approaches in this 1984 view, which again shows No. 33049 with its Railfreight vans. The goods shed retained its large wooden central doors, despite the loss of the roof. The grounded pallet van was in use for storage. © Chris

A northward view from the lattice footbridge shows a Class 73 which has come to grief in the yard; workers are preparing to re-rail the locomotive. This picture shows to good effect how overgrown the yard was by this stage, in addition to indicating how much lower the area was than the adjacent running lines (left). © Chris
