Bexleyheath is one of the beneficiaries of Network Rail’s ‘’Access for All’’ programme, which aims to provide step-free access to platforms at numerous stations nationwide. This has involved the construction of a new footbridge at the eastern end of the layout, replacing the previous lattice structure of 1924 which was situated west of the main station building. The construction process here has been distinctly two-stage: the basic bridge structure was completed in early 2011, but it was not until August 2013 that work was scheduled to start on equipping it with lifts.
An eastward view shows that the ex-SR footbridge has gone and that the lift shafts of the new structure were more or less complete, but yet to open. © David Glasspool
Unlike recent footbridges at Strood and Gravesend, that at Bexleyheath lacks a roof. At least the lift shafts have been encased in red brick, in keeping with the main station building. © David Glasspool
This westward view from the end of platform 2 shows the line snaking towards Welling, the platforms of which are just under 1¼-miles distant. Bexleyheath goods yard was formerly situated beyond the road bridge, on the left. © David Glasspool
