The flyover carrying the Alton branch is in the background of this view, which shows No. 73114 "Etarre" with a thirteen-coach train heading towards Waterloo. In the background, framed by the flyover, can just be seen a three-car Western Region DMU (later Class 117) on the "down" slow, which was operating a shuttle service between Woking and Basingtoke. As of 1959, No. 73114 was Nine Elms-allocated, but was later based out of Weymouth, where the locomotive was withdrawn in June 1966. © David Glasspool Collection

Lacking both a smokebox number plate and name plates, this is No. 73118, formerly called "King Leodegrance", fronting empty stock at Bournemouth Central. The locomotive had been lacking a nameplate since at least 1964; eventually, in 1967, it received a "homemade" smokebox box plate and the number "73118" was scrawled on the buffer beam in chalk. By 1959, No. 73118 had received Nine Elms allocation and it survived on the South Western Division of the Southern Region until the steam of steam on those lines in July 1967. © David Glasspool Collection

A Morris Minor convertible completes this period scene, which shows No. 73080 "Merlin" approaching Brookwood with a Bournemouth West to Waterloo service. No. 73080 was the first of the "Standard Arthur" series of named engines; it was completed at Derby in June 1955, but did not receive its name until 1961. By that time, the engine was allocated to Stewarts Lane (73A). The locomotive ended its days at Weymouth (71G) in December 1966. © David Glasspool Collection

The last regular South Eastern Division steam from Victoria disappeared with the completion of the Kent Coast Electrification Scheme in 1962, but a rail tour fronted by No. 73065 was reliving the era about 4½ years later. The train was the "West Country Special", organised by the "Southern Counties Touring Society", which went as far west as Exeter St David's and returned to Waterloo. No. 73065 took the tour as far as Westbury via Crystal Palace, Norwood Junction, and Redhill; at the latter it ventured onto the Reading line via Guildford. Unrebuilt West Country Class No. 34019 "Bideford" took the carriages onto Exeter via the Great Western Main Line; from the Devon capital, Merchant Navy Class No. 35023 "Holland- Afrika Line" brought the train back to London via Yeovil Junction and Salisbury. Throughout the 1950s, No. 73065 was based on the London Midland Region, notably Sheffield, but ended its days on the South Western Division of the Southern Region, remaining in service until the end of steam traction in this area in July 1967. © David Glasspool Collection

Another rail tour, but this time at Clapham Junction with No. 73029 double-heading with West Country Class No. 34023 "Blackmore Vale". This is the "Farewell to Southern Steam" special, heading away from the capital. The tour was a Waterloo to Weymouth round-trip, via Guildford, Fareham and Southampton on the outward leg (including the Swanage branch), and then back via Romsey and Salisbury on the return. As of 1955, No. 73029 was under the Western Region at Bristol St Philip's Marsh, but by 1959 had been re-allocated to Weymouth.
