On a wet winter's day, No. 80079 is seen ''under the wires'' at Liverpool Street. At this time, No. 80079 and a few other members of the class were used for empty carriage workings to/from the London terminus. When steam traction was eliminated from Liverpool Street completely in 1962, No. 80079 was transferred far away to the Welsh borders. It was finally withdrawn in July 1965 and dispatched to Barry Scrap Yard. It was then rescued by the Severn Valley Railway in 1971, and restored to working condition over the subsequent six years. © David Glasspool Collection
A filthy No. 80042 is seen at a wet Ashford, facing in the London direction, having its water tanks refilled. Third rail is in evidence, the Kent Coast Electrification being in full swing. The SE&CR station and semaphore signals are seen not long before demolition. The brick tower behind the engine was once host to a footbridge. © David Glasspool Collection
A somewhat grubby No. 80059 is seen alongside platform 2 at Tonbridge, in about 1962. Steam could still be seen at Tonbridge up until January 1965, on those services to Redhill. This line, which passes through Edenbridge and Godstone, escaped electrification, and was instead dieselised from 1965 onwards. © David Glasspool Collection
