A London-bound view from the ''high-level'' road bridge reveals the 428-yard-long Fort Pitt Tunnel. The 1961 platform canopies are based on the same design as those at the contemporary St Mary Cray. The removal of the loops allowed the extension of the platforms to the tunnel mouth. The ''down'' side platform canopy was V-shaped, because the northern side of this surface was still serving a truncated platform spur. © David Glasspool
Steaming through Chatham on 25th February 2006 behind LMS 5MT No. 45407 ''Lancashire Fusilier'' on the ''Granville Express'': on platform 1 can be seen the canopy of 1961 origin. The brickwork of the station building is in very good condition, although it is evident that windows are blocked up (top left). The concrete face of the 1959 ''up'' side platform extension can be seen at the bottom right. © David Glasspool
No. 466005 is seen trundling into Chatham on 9th June 2006, with a Gillingham service which has come via Dartford. Emerging with it from Fort Pitt Tunnel is a Class 465 unit in the earliest of the class' privatisation schemes. © Ted Hamer
