Hither Green Marshalling Yard
This view of a snowy ''down'' yard includes a small rail-mounted hand-operated crane. Just to the right of the crane is what appears to be a cattle dock (perhaps it is a little small for this?). Overhead can again be seen the catenary for the E5000 Series electric locos. © Roger Goodrum
The last of the 4-COR units, originally introduced in 1937 as part of the Portsmouth Electrification, were withdrawn in September 1972. Storage space was at a premium on the Southern Region and these redundant units could be found berthed at Hither Green and Crystal Palace. In the above view, obsolete 4-COR units are seen stored in the ''up'' sidings at Hither Green Marshalling Yard, the Continental Freight Depot just about being visible in the background. © Roger Goodrum
Looking towards Grove Park, this is a view of the ''down'' yard from one of the 150-foot floodlight towers. In the foreground is a ''JA'' Electro-Diesel (Class 73) upon an electrified loop, whilst stabled in the middle-distance is a diesel shunter (Class 08). © Roger Goodrum
