This northward view from 1982 is taken from the original section of the Pier station, brought into use in 1884. Stabled alongside the timber platform is 2-HAP unit No. 6025, painted in all-over BR Blue livery. The platform extension of 1938 can be seen commencing at the front of the unit, and in view is the upward-sloping timber canopy, which survived rationalisation works during electrification. Note the second upward-sloping canopy, on the left: as mentioned in the main text, this was not rail-served, and faced onto the slipway. Finally, on the right, is the ferry terminal brought into use in January 1976. © David Glasspool Collection

On the left is the car park for the ferry terminal, which encroaches onto land formerly occupied by the Pier station run-a-round loop.
