Millbrook

6th May 1967

Looking west (Brockenhurst-bound) from the station’s footbridge, we now see the first locomotive of the West Country Class: No. 34001 “Exeter”. In Rebuilt form, the engine is seen heading the 11:18 AM ex-Weymouth departure past the large goods shed, the latter of which ceased to be used from 17th July 1967. The SR signal box and semaphores survived electrification. © David Glasspool Collection

May 1977

A Southampton-bound view from the footbridge shows that a mixture of colour light and semaphore signals existed by that time, and that the platform retained SR concrete bracket lampposts with hexagonal lampshades. Class 33 No. 33105 passes with a solitary BR Mk 1 Full Brake in a scene predating the road widening works that involved a bridge over the railway beyond the eastern end of the platform. © David Glasspool Collection

6th December 1982

The same viewpoint as the May 1967 photograph, but thirteen years on. The signal box, although still standing, had become defunct the previous year and colour lights had replaced semaphores. A Freightliner container terminal had been operational on the former goods yard site since January 1968. Class 47 No. 47362 is seen hauling a train of permanent way materials, whilst in the background, a Hampshire/Berkshire DEMU approaches. © David Glasspool Collection

July 1995

A desolate westward scene shows the island platform shorn of its offices and canopy — passengers had no protection from the elements by this stage. The SR’s footbridge remained, as did concrete lampposts of the same vintage, but the rest had gone. Class 58 No. 58047 is seen with what your author believes to be LPG tanks from Fawley, bound for Eastleigh. © David Glasspool Collection

June 2009

By the time of this westward view, a token section of canopy had been installed upon the island, to at least provide some shelter. The footbridge’s extension over Millbrook Road (A33) can be seen in the right background. No. 66522 is seen hauling what your author believes to be loaded sand hoppers from Wool (Dorset) to Angerstein Wharf, London Borough of Greenwich. © David Glasspool Collection
