The footbridge dates from the 1880s, when it replaced an earlier bridge at the time when the level crossing was abolished. The closure of the level crossing allowed the southward extension of the platforms, the removal of the gate box, and the provision of a new signal box at the opposite end of the station. © David Glasspool

The first arched bridge carries the Crystal Palace ''down'' line; the second over bridge carries the four track Brighton main line; finally, the third span over the tunnel portal carries the ''up'' line from Crystal Palace. © David Glasspool
