New station signs in evidence at Penshurst, but all is not rosy on the platforms. David Glasspool

Rationalisation has affected those intermediate stations between Redhill and Tonbridge particularly badly, to

the extent that very few historic artefacts remain. A Tonbridge-bound view reveals the original SER ''up''

platform on the right, whilst in the foreground is the replacement ''down'' platform, completed at the time

of electrification. David Glasspool

The oldest structure in this view is the quaint ''up'' side waiting shelter, built by the SR in 1925, subsequently

avoiding the demolitions of 1971. The footbridge dates from 1993, when electrification of the line for Chunnel

freight traffic saw the abolition of the track foot crossing and the original ''down'' platform. David Glasspool

A Tonbridge-bound view shows the 78-yard-long Penshurst Tunnel in the background, after which the line makes

an immediate kink. On the left is the redundant ''down'' platform, which became obsolete as a result of the 1993

electrification works. Amazingly, the timber waiting shelter still exists upon it, albeit in a severely forlorn state.
