A southward view shows the prefabricated concrete of platform 3, which was in place by May 1966. This platform starts further south than Nos. 1 and 2, which negated the requirement to build it straddling the road at the station’s northern end. © David Glasspool

Now down at street level, at the northern end of the layout, the bridge span that carries the single track of the “down” relief is dominant in the foreground. Platforms 1 and 2 pass over the road, above the arched span, and have done since the outset (when they were originally of timber construction, rather than concrete). © David Glasspool

A southward view at street level on the “up” side shows the covered walkway which links the road with the former booking hall and platform 1. The flight of stairs to/from platform 1 is fully enclosed, even boasting glazing, in spite of how exposed the platforms are. © David Glasspool

The booking hall has been tastefully restored in bygone colours with traditional wood panelling and converted into a cafe. It is possible to walk from the station forecourt to platform 1 via the cafe during the latter’s business hours. © David Glasspool

The high ceiling and copious lighting give a bright and airy environment. Passengers have the benefit of a departure board (top left) For platform 1, head left in the above photograph. © David Glasspool
