Now a closer look at the actual structure. This is again the incongruous, but nevertheless interesting,

fourth trainshed span. When station redevelopment was completed in 1977, this trainshed was

re-roofed with corrugated metal sheeting. The curve profile of the fourth span was not retained

and, as can be seen at the apex of the roof, a triangular addition has now superseded the top of

the curved arch. It should also be noted that before re-roofing, the area of trainshed covering

the two through tracks was actually open to the elements - it was a ventilator. Only the areas

of roof over the platforms had solid coverage. David Glasspool

An original SR ''Target'' from Blackfriars is still in evidence on the wall of a stationery shop

in Rye. The ''Target'' design was in use between 1923 until 1947 inclusive, the equally familiar

BR (SR) ''Totem'' taking over thereafter. Phil Nicholson

Platform rebuilding in 1925 left this peculiar feature: trainshed supports in-between the tracks

of platforms 2 and 3. With the removal of the platform beneath the supports, triangular extensions

were added to bridge the height gap. Both this and the previous picture depict the station on

21st January 2006. David Glasspool

Class 465 No. 465160 is in evidence in the terminating platforms on 21st January 2006 as a view

of the South Bank is afforded through the supports of the trainshed. David Glasspool
