An eastward view captures 4 EPB No. 5197 on a Dartford to Charing Cross service, although seemingly displaying a via Greenwich head code. The rear timber elevation of the "high-level" booking hall is evident, its design reminscent of the structure that still exists at Northfleet. The roof of the former Station Master's house is just visible to the right of the booking hall, above the canopy. © David Glasspool Collection

A second eastward view, nearly a quarter of a century later, shows that both canopies were severely truncated as part of the station's renovation in the mid-1980s. They had been cut back by March 1985, by which time the booking office was still under scaffolding. The wall on the left, lining the rear of the "down" platform, was partially demolished when the canopy was shortened, resulting in the step-down effect seen here. A section of the "down" canopy's valance had been taken out since restoration for better sighting of the banner repeater signal. The former bay platform face had been sealed off by railings and the track bed returned to nature. © David Glasspool

The canopy over the entrance had gone, but the "high-level" booking hall had changed very little externally since the 1892 view seen on the previous page. The staircase to the London-bound platform is accessed via the blue-painted arch on the left. © David Glasspool
