Midi/Zuid/South: Eurostar Terminal

28th June 2010

Whilst the extent of the station’s roof ends at platform 7, the supporting framework at the southwestern end of the layout continues across the tracks serving platform Nos. 8 to 11, as seen here above SNCB Class 21 No. 2113. This locomotive was scrapped in 2016 after suffering fire damage to one of its cabs. The large building block in the background was completed in 2003 and forms the station’s northwestern facade. © David Glasspool Collection

This photograph has been included to capture the huge building, on the right, that came into use with the current station in 1952. Historically, most of the structure was used as a postal sorting depot by SNCB, and closed its doors in April 2022. After closure, a renovation and extension of the building commenced, and it is planned that the structure will house shops, restaurants, and office accommodation for SNCB’s staff. Bombardier TRAXX electric No. E186230 (SNCB No. 2838) is seen after forming a service from Amsterdam and, your author suspects, is heading off to the carriage sidings at Forest. ©

This view of Bombardier TRAXX electric locomotive No. E186225 (Class 28 No. 2833 in SNCB’s numbering series) approaching from the southwest includes one of the ends of the 2006-completed viaduct used by high speed trains to and from the French border. The gradient of the viaduct is perhaps exaggerated by the telephoto camera lens. © David Glasspool Collection

An unusual feature of the Eurostar terminal is the set of gates which can be closed against the tracks of platform Nos. 1 and 2. The gates are opened for imminent arrivals and departures, but are closed the rest of the time. © David Glasspool

It was just past midday local time and half set Nos. 374017 and 374018 had recently arrived from St Pancras. This northeastward view shows that in spite of the roof, the platforms are exposed to the elements on the left, much like the domestic platforms in the extension at St Pancras. © David Glasspool
