Bulleid Light Pacific

West Country / Battle of Britain Class

34104

Filthy Rebuilt West Country Class No. 34104 ''Bere Alston'' is seen at Woking, devoid of nameplates. First appearing in April 1950, No. 34104 had a career of just over seventeen years, being withdrawn in June 1967, not long after the above photograph was taken. It had been in rebuilt form since May 1961 and was scrapped in Newport, South Wales. © David Glasspool Collection

No. 34108 at East Croydon: 19th March 1967

A filthy No. 34108 ''Wincanton'' is seen departing East Croydon on 19th March 1967 with the ''Southern Rambler'' rail tour, bound for Brighton. This was the last steam-hauled train to visit both Brighton and Eastbourne, and it started and finished at London Victoria. Note the crowd gathered on the bridge in the background. © David Glasspool Collection

Lacking nameplates and smoke box plate, we again see No. 34108 ''Wincanton'', pictured at Waterloo on 10th June 1967. The engine had entered traffic in April 1950, subsequently being rebuilt in May 1959.  It was withdrawn from service in the month of this photograph. © David Glasspool Collection

34036/35014/35003

Many thanks to Richard Dixon for identifying the engines and location. Condemned Bulleid Pacifics are seen in the sidings at Weymouth shed in July 1967. The nearest is No. 34036 ''Westward Ho'', which had survived in service until the very end of steam on the SR. It was latterly dispatched to Cashmore's yard, Newport, and scrapped in February 1968. We are also afforded the briefest of glimpses of Merchant Navy No. 35026 ''Lamport & Holt Line'', its open firebox door just emerging from behind No. 34036's right-hand smoke deflector. Beyond, we see the front ends of two more Merchant Navy engines: No. 35014 ''Nederland Line'', and the furthest away, No. 35003 ''Royal Mail''. All these engines were scrapped at John Cashmore's, Newport, South Wales. Note the ''Mickey Mouse'' Ivatt Tank getting in on the act on the extreme right. © David Glasspool Collection
