Bulleid Light Pacific
West Country / Battle of Britain Class
34089
No. 34089 is seen once again at Salisbury, this time entering the station from the London direction at the head of a banana van rake on 12th June 1967. This locomotive had the distinction of being the last steam locomotive to be overhauled at Eastleigh Works, re-emerging in pristine condition on 3rd October 1966. © David Glasspool Collection

This splendid view depicts rebuilt No. 34093 ''Saunton'' rumbling into Bournemouth from the west. The makeshift smokebox plate reveals this is in the final weeks of steam on the Southern Region. In tow can be seen a pair of Bulleid-design carriages, followed by a BR Mk 2a. Behind the locomotive is Bournemouth engine shed, sporting a BR-fitted asbestos roof – the tank upon the tower was a water softener. Entering service in October 1949, No. 34093 re-emerged in May 1960 in rebuilt form, and survived right to the end, in July 1967. © David Glasspool Collection

Bulleid-designed 4 SUB stock is in the background as filthy Rebuilt WC No. 34100 ''Appledore'' drifts through Wimbledon with a Bournemouth express on 9th April 1967. This was the last steam locomotive to haul the legendary ''Golden Arrow'' out of Victoria, on 11th June 1961, and survived right to the end of steam in July 1967. © David Glasspool Collection
34103
No. 34103 ''Calstock'' is seen at Eastleigh in 1964 in unrebuilt form but with cut-down BR tender. Behind the engine lurks non-corridor BR Mk 1 carriage stock. This engine entered traffic in February 1950, being built under British Railways auspices. It avoided being rebuilt, and was withdrawn from service in September 1965. © David Glasspool Collection
