Class 33

Crompton

1984

In 1984, a pair of Class 33s are seen rounding the curve from the ''Chatham'' main line, into Strood, hauling a British Rail ''Merrymakers'' special. The train began in Kent, and will eventually reach Exeter in the south west. Excursions during the Summer period were once frequent, with Class 33s hauling stock which had originated from the WCML, across the South Eastern Division. Summer services from the Western Region frequently brought named Class 47s, notably No. 47076 ''City of Truro''. © Chris

January 1988

Flooding in Strood Tunnel in January 1988 required a diesel-powered shuttle service between Rochester and Gravesend. Class 33 No. 33117 was part of a small fleet drafted in to cover, and is seen here at Strood pairing with 4TC unit No. 8024. In the background, on the left, can be seen Class 207 DEMU No. 207008, also part of the emergency fleet. © Wayne Walsh
