Class 508

South Eastern Division

A new livery, but has there been any improvement in travelling experience? Ted Hamer

kindly submitted this picture for inclusion, depicting No. 508208 at Sheerness-on-Sea on

10th April 2006, at about 17:00. Cosmetically the train appears spruce, but internally it

was the same old story, vandalism on the Sheerness branch not helping the cause. The unit

is seen on this occasion stabled alongside platform 2, which Ted notes as unusual: earlier,

No. 508211 had shorted a motor whilst stabled in platform 1, that very morning. Until the

electricity feeding this platform line had been cleared of any faults, all services used platform

2. Ted Hamer

No. 508208 is seen on an earlier date, this time on 16th February 2006 trundling towards Tonbridge

station on the Redhill line. David Glasspool

No. 508212 forming the Sheerness-on-Sea shuttle service

The units transferred from the Wirral Lines to the South Eastern Division were renumbered from

the 5081XX series to the 5082XX range (508201 to 508212). The last of this transferred batch is

seen in the above picture at Sittingbourne, forming the half-hourly service to Sheerness-on-Sea on

a freezing cold 11th March 2004. David Glasspool
