Class 56
Brush Type 5
26th September 1992
Ninety-seven of these locomotives were allocated to British Rail's TrainLoad Coal sector from 1987
onwards. Each freight sector had its own distinctive symbol - the coal logo is seen in this picture,
consisting of four black diamonds superimposed on a yellow square, this itself partly covering a
black square. Hither Green was predominantly TrainLoad Construction sector, but nevertheless
No. 56114 ''Maltby Colliery'' is depicted outside the shed building at Hither Green Depot on 26th
September 1992, with Parcels sector-liveried Class 47 No. 47575 ''City of Hereford'' trailing behind.

The first of the Class is seen stabled at Hither Green Depot on 16th May 1993 alongside stablemate
No. 56033. Both locomotives, part of the TrainLoad Construction pool, were here until July 1993,
when soil excavation at Chatham was completed. In the background is a newer breed - the Class 60.

19th May 2006
On 19th May 2006, Class 56 No. 56302 is seen passing through Stone Crossing at a very sedate
pace with the return ''Fastline'' working to Thamesport. Despite its slow pace, the train was right
on time, expecting to pass Hoo Junction at 20:18. This particular working was indeed lightly
loaded: there was not one container in sight! © David Glasspool
