Wearing the first generation of the Network SouthEast livery, Class 50 No. 50025 "Invincible" is seen approaching from the south with the 12:30 Penzance to Paddington. The stacked sleepers on the right are upon the former site of the single-track connection with the goods yard, which had been used exclusively for camping coaches since August 1963. One of the carriages, a 1941 LMS inspection saloon, can be seen behind the white gate on the right. © David Glasspool Collection
Class 47 No. 47850 is seen in the "up" platform loop with an InterCity Cross Country service. This locomotive was involved in a collision at Longsight Depot, Manchester, in July 1995, which resulted in its withdrawal from service and scrapping two years later. Traditional benches were still in evidence on the platform, and the station building on this side was by this time in use as holiday accommodation; the chocolate and cream scheme had also been replaced by green and cream, these colours being shared with the 1978 shelters. © David Glasspool Collection
Class 47 No. 47714 is seen shortly before departing the "down" platform loop. In the first half of 1993, this locomotive had been a frequent performer on Waterloo to Exeter services, so this is possibly a train from that terminus through to Paignton. Indeed, the carriages are BR Mk2 air-conditioned stock from the InterCity business sector, but some of these vehicles did creep onto the Salisbury route shortly before locomotive haulage was abolished. On the left is the "up" side waiting shelter of 1978, beside the timber station building of 1912. © David Glasspool Collection
