An October 2001 seaward view reveals the SER platform canopies, which indicate the extent of the original 1893 platforms. The SER ''up'' side signal box formerly resided immediately beyond the canopy, where the red brick wall begins in the background. The footbridge in the background was by this time closed off, having originally been erected in 1980 for the ferry terminal. Scheduled rail services had ceased in May, and the ''down'' platform had already been taken over by the VSOE company, the canopy framework sporting a brown paint scheme. © Mike Glasspool

After the closure of the carriage berthing sidings to the west of the station, the ''up'' platform was extended to become the longest surface. The goods yard sidings formerly converged from the left, in this seaward view. The track narrows here to single line; third rail was never taken beyond the set of points. The ship moored on the left is for freight haulage, rather than for the carriage of passengers. © Mike Glasspool

A landward view includes the steel swing bridge of 1930, which could deal with heavier boat trains than its predecessors. The ''Inner Harbour'' is on the left, the ''Outer Harbour'' is on the right. Before the advent of the swing bridge, the railway used to terminate in limbo within the water. © Mike Glasspool
