A trio of suburban services are seen stabled in the platforms. From left to right: Class 465 unit Nos. 465002,
465157, and 465003. The pair of discs hanging from the platform canopy are banner repeater signals.

The only structure of 1860 origin in this view is the Grosvenor Hotel, seen on the right, beyond the main façade.
The red-brick frontage building seen here is mainly an extension of the aforementioned hotel, the windows above
the canopy revealing rooms - those below are station offices. The canopy here did once proclaim the place names
which this station served, but they disappeared seven years before this picture was taken. © David Glasspool

The façade of Portland Stone was completed in 1909, as part of the station's reconstruction. The blank plaque
sandwiched in-between the upper and lower windows formerly displayed the legend ''Great Western Railway'',
this company joint-leasing the station until 1932. The text at the very top of the building - ''Southern Railway'' -
superseded ''South Eastern & Chatham Railway'' after the Grouping. © David Glasspool
