Arrival at Yeovil Pen Mill was made nearly 1½-hours behind schedule. It was here that the ''King'' was due to
detach and run to Yeovil Junction with the support coach, diesel haulage being made to Weymouth. Severe
delays saw that the steam engine took the train all the way to the end of the line. David Glasspool
Beyond Pen Mill, the line sprouts a spur to Yeovil Junction, which can be observed ascending on the right. The
layout here once comprised quadruple track: a pair of lines between Pen Mill and Weymouth and a second
pair between Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Town stations. David Glasspool
After Pen Mill, the diesel at the rear continued to be a dead weight, and the steam locomotive began struggling
up the inclines. A brief stop was eventually made immediately outside Maiden Newton station, to build up the fire.
