''Jaffa Cake'' 4 Ceps at London Bridge

Two 4 Cep units wearing the popular ''Jaffa Cake'' livery are seen leaving London Bridge high

level station on 27th August 1988, forming an eight-coach train. This unusual livery displayed

the colours of the 1982-formed London & South East sector, one of five business sectors which

were set up by British Rail in that year. This livery was a regular sight on the Hastings line, even

after the re-branding of the L&SE sector into the better-known Network SouthEast. Mike Glasspool

''Jaffa Cake'' and ''Network SouthEast'' 4 Cep and 4 Vep

The London & Greenwich Railway 150th Anniversary event held at Cannon Street in August

1986 provided an ideal opportunity to view the changing liveries on EMU stock. On 24th August

1986, 4 Cep No. 1529 is seen in 'Jaffa Cake' livery, coupled to a 4 Vep unit displaying the then

new Network SouthEast colours (the sector having only been formed two months before). 4

Ceps treated with Jaffa Cake livery were initially used exclusively on the then newly electrified

Hastings line, where they were branded '1066 Electrics'. Jaffa Cake was initially unique to the

Hastings dedicated 4 Cep pool, before being used elsewhere. Mike Glasspool

No. 1593 at London Victoria's ''Chatham'' side

On 27th February 2004 a sparkling clean refurbished 4 Cep, No. 1593, is seen at platform 6 of

London Victoria's 'Chatham side', still wearing Network SouthEast livery. Despite the unit's tidy

appearance, it had very little time left until its withdrawal and on 5th April 2004, was being

hauled from Ramsgate to Immingham for scrap, behind Class 67 No. 67007. No. 1593 was also

in the company of No. 1594 and 4 Cig No. 1811. All three were ex-South Eastern Division stock.
