Horsted Keynes

Bluebell & Primrose Line

August 1987

No. 55 ''Stepney'' once agin, but this time with a modified version of the LB&SCR livery since the 1967 photograph. The main station building's platform canopy had lost its slope and become flat-roofed by this time. Tank wagon No. 1921, seen here, was formerly owned by ESSO, and was donated to the Bluebell Railway by the company in April 1978. © Mike Glasspool

Since the 1967 view, the platform line and sidings had been reinstated on the western side of the ''up'' island, the former of which was filled with a motley collection of stock, including a Pullman car. © Mike Glasspool

The signal box was formerly known as ''Horsted Keynes South'', but the suffix was dropped on the abolition of its smaller counterpart north of the platforms. This design of signal box was standardised along the entire route, similar examples once existing at Kingscote and West Hoathly. The pattern which can be seen in-between the windows and the roof line was also replicated on the plastered surfaces of the station buildings, before these were tiled over due to leaks. © David Glasspool

A view in the Sheffield Park direction shows a lot of changes, notably the erection of the canopy on the right, complete with offices underneath. The new canopy is to the later Southern Railway style, whilst its predecessor was of the 1882 LB&SCR style when demolished. © David Glasspool
