Redlynch
8th March 2014
Having just passed Redlynch station, Cairns-bound, this two-vehicle unit would not look out of place in a 1960s sci-fi movie. This is a ''2000 Class'' railmotor, which operates the ''Savannahlander'' service between Cairns and Forsayth. As the crow flies, these places are about 180 miles (290 kilometres) apart, and the winding nature of the route means this trip is taken at a leisurely pace over two days. In the above view, the unit had come to a stop for a lengthy period of time, at the end of a signalling block section – presumably it was waiting for the preceding Kuranda Scenic Railway service to clear the platform at Cairns. © David Glasspool

Just to the north of the previous view, the line is carried upon a shallow timber bridge, under which passes a curious narrow-gauge track. This is of 610-mm (2-foot) gauge and is part of the sugar cane railway network mentioned in the main text. This line, in addition to a maze of others, eventually ends up at Gordonvale Mill, where the cane is processed. © David Glasspool

A desolate scene presents itself in this northerly view across the tracks. The short platform, used in connection with freight traffic, can just be seen emerging to the right of the pile of grey ballast. © David Glasspool
